SME 3012

Precision Pick-up arm

Made in England by SME Limited, Mill Road, Steyning, West Sussex.

 "The original company was formed in 1946 under the title The Scale Model Equipment Company Limited to manufacture scale models and detail parts for the model engineering trade. During the 1950's movement was away from model making to precision engineering, principally parts for aircraft instruments and business machines.

In 1959 Alastair Robertson-Aikman, the Company's founder, required a pick-up arm for his own use and an experimental model was built. It received such an enthusiastic reception from friends in the sound industry that it was decided to produce it commercially and the first SME precision pick-up arm appeared in September 1959. Production was 25 units per week composed entirely of individually machined components. At this time a new factory situated in Mill Road, Steyning was opened and the Company's name was changed to SME Limited, a less committal title to suit its new activities.

SME now has over 60 years experience in high quality precision engineering and the Company's plant at Steyning is now probably the largest and best equipped devoted to the manufacture of precision pick-up arms and turntables." (from SME Official Web-site)

“ La Compagnia fu fondata nel 1946 con la denominazione The Scale Model Equipment Company Limited  per la manifattura di modelli in scala e componenti di ingegneristica. Negli anni cinquanta fu abbandonata tale manifattura e intrapresa quella di pezzi di precisione, principalmente parti di strumenti  per aerei e macchine commerciali.

Nel 1959  Alastair Robertson-Aikman, il fondatore della Compagnia, chiese la costruzione di un braccio giradischi per uso personale e così fu costruito un modello sperimentale. Questo ricevette critiche entusiaste dagli amici dell’industria del suono, così fu deciso di produrlo commercialmente  e il primo braccio SME apparve nel settembre 1959. La produzione fu di 25 unità per settimana composta interamente da componenti forgiati a macchina individualmente. In quell’epoca fu aperta una nuova fabbrica situata in Mill Road, Steyning e il nome della Compagnia fu cambiato in SME Limited, un nome meno impegnativo per intraprendere queste nuove attività.

The 3012 tonearm, probably introduced in late 60’s or in the beginning 70’s, has S- shaped stainless steel or aluminum arm tube, length 12 ¹/₈” (307.30 mm), effective mass 14.0 g. ca.. Steel or Nylon knife-edge bearing. Barrel-shaped main counterweight (one or two-piece). Rider weight (one or two-piece). Almost ever  detachable headshell.

Knife edge bearing definition : A balance beam or lever arm fulcrum in the form of a hardened steel wedge; used to minimize friction.

Definizione di  knife-edge bearing:  Un asse di equilibrio o un fulcro del  braccio di leva avente la forma di un cuneo acciaio; utilizzato per ridurre al minimo l'attrito.

They are recognized three different models and various versions. Basically:

• 3012 Series One   
• 3012 Series Two
• 3012 R

Il braccio 3012,introdotto probabilmente alla fine degli anni 60 o all’inizio dei 70, ha la forma ad S ed è in acciaio o alluminio, con lunghezza di 307,30 mm e massa effettiva intorno ai 14,0 grammi. Appoggio a lama di coltello (knife-edge bearing) in acciaio o nylon. Contrappeso principale e laterale (rider counterweight) in uno o due pezzi). Quasi sempre la conchiglia porta testina è staccabile dal braccio. Si riconoscono vari modelli e versioni del 3012.

Si distinguono essenzialmente:

·         3012 Serie I

·         3012 Serie II

·         3012 R

3012 Series I

The first series is easily identifiable because the knife edge bearing housing has a round top and  did not have an anti-skate mechanism as standard but this was available as an optional extra. Stainless steel arm tube.1-piece barrel-shaped main counterweight and 1-piece rider counterweight. Removable headshell.

Il 3012 prima serie è facilmente riconoscibile perchè l’alloggio per il knife-edge bearing è rotondo alla sommità. Inoltre non ha l’anti-skating (che è un optional). Il braccio è di acciaio. Sia il contrappeso principale che quello laterale sono singoli.

3012 Series II

(until 1972)

Aluminum arm tube. Anti-skating as standard device. Steel knife-edge bearings. Removable headshell. All the series II models have knife edge bearing housing with a bishops mitre top.

Braccio in alluminio. Anti-skating in dotazione standard. Knife-edge bearing in acciaio. Testina rimovibile. In tutti i 3012 serie II l'alloggio del knife-edge bearing ha in sommità la forma di una mitra di vescovo.

There are three different versions, recognizable for the main counterweight:

• 1.th version : 2-piece main counterweight but the rear piece is fixed to the arm.
• 2.nd version : 2-piece main counterweight, both adjustable.
• 3.th version : 1-piece main counterweight (obviously adjustable)

Vi sono tre diverse versioni della Serie II, a seconda del contrappeso principale:

• 1.a versione : contrappeso in due pezzi ma il pezzo posteriore è fissato al braccio
• 2.a versione : contrappeso in due pezzi, entrambi regolabili
• 3.a versione : contrappeso in un singolo pezzo (ovviamente regolabile)

3012 R

(post-1972)

Stainless steel arm tube. Nylon knife-edge bearings as standard (steel bearings as optional). 2-piece main counterweight. Knurled dial at rear of arm for adjusting of the main counterweight. Detachable or fixed headshell. This tonearm can be used with very heavy cartridges (up to 32.5g)

Braccio in acciao. Knife-edge bearing in nylon ( in acciao come optional). Contrappeso principale in due pezzi,regolabile mediante una vite sull’estremità del braccio. Conchiglia porta testina staccabile o fissa. Questo braccio può essere utilizzato anche con testine molto pesanti (fino a 32.5 g) 

SUMMARY

*   The early versions of the series II had a two piece counterweight with the rearmost part fixed to the end of the arm stub. The second version was also two part but the rear part was adjustable in position. The third version had a one piece counterweight.

**  Only the front part of the weight is removable.

*** The extra rider weight for heavier cartridges
